Random Questions From The Recent Past
Just some random questions/concerns I need to voice:
- Why do people constantly refer to themselves in the 3rd person online? Facebook status messages, IM away messages, out of the office messages? Is the goal to trick others into thinking that the system somehow posted the message on your behalf, and that you, the author and object of the message, somehow are unaware of your current status? This sounds like a serious mental condition to me.
- Why do people constantly goof the tense of the verb "forget?" I hear this all the time: "What is your name again? I forget your name." Shouldn't it be "I forgot your name" instead? Are you actively forgetting the other person's name as you are speaking, or did you more likely forget their name at some previous point and are now simply making this known to another person, thus requiring the past tense of the verb. At least use a modifier to make it correct: "I always forget your name" or "I always forget things." Again, the lack of differentiation between past and present is either a serious mental condition, or a remnant of far too much time travel. You be the judge.
- Why do people tap on soda cans before opening them?
- Why do people still insist of generating paper documents and mailing them through the post office, requiring paper, time, and fuel to deliver? Email seems to work pretty well.
- Along those same lines, why is it secure and good practice to fax a document, sign it, and return it via fax, when emailing a document, printing/signing it, and then scanning/emailing it back is not secure? Last I checked, most fax machines don't have biometric security mechanisms.
- Why do most retail stores, banks, airports, etc., have a well defined area of space between the current person being waited on at the counter and the rest of the line that is not to be occupied by any person other than in passing? What could possibly be going on that requires a 10ft front-to-back safe zone, while still quite happily allowing another person to stand two feet to the left/right so they too can go about their business? Last I checked, sound has a way of progressing in all directions, not much backwards. Is this a fundamental misunderstanding of basic physics, or something more?

Ha ha, The 3rd person party of FB, IM, what not is because someone else is reading it, so to them its the correct tense, I'm sure some people get some pleasure outta talking about themselves in the 3rd person, but oh well.
I know what you mean w/ the forgetting names.. but when _I_ talk to someone, i say Forgot, not forget.. forgot means past tense which would be the right thing to say.. *shrug*
I try ever semester to get my professors to just let me email them my project stuff, but NOOOOOO they want me waste time and effort PRINTING! I have everything on my laptop ready to hit send, and you want me to go somewhere w/ a printer, put my stuff ona thumb drive, stick it in the other comoputer, log in, wait for the printer to warm up then print my doc then reverse the process.... I've gotten it my way .. a majority of the time.
As for the space issues, i think its not so much voice reverberation, but mostly most people don't have 20/40 vision or _X-RAY_ vision, so likely you won't be able to see someone's pin number or account info from said location behind the person.
Nuff said.

ok, I am taking a break from nursing (my 5 month old, not my almost 3 yr old, so I am not like the lady), so I'll just attack the two that I know.
1) It doesn't work, but the tapping of the pop tab is supposed to make sure that it doesn't fizz out
2) Strange lady with bottle...too lazy to wean child or attachment issues. My guess is that the child uses the bottle for comfort, not nourishment. It's like a pacifier or blankie. On a personal note, my mom says I walked around with a bottle hanging out of my mouth until age 3. At least it wasn't breastfeeding! And speaking of breastfeeding, I am disappointed in the lack of pictures of your probably adorable pregnant wife on your page or facebook page.

Since I work with SLA contracts on a daily basis, I know why the fax vs email is a big deal.
If you get an email, you can edit the attachment in many different applications, including changing a signature or changing text in the contact very easily! So I could agree to a contract, sign it and email it back over to you. You can open it up in many different forms and change the text. That will make it look like, in a legal term, I might have agreed with someone I didn't...like a 20% increase in maintenance a year.
With a fax, you have to have the original fax for legal purposes. You can save a copy electronically for your records but you damn well better have that original fax if there is a disbute with the contract.
The best way is to have the original signed copy with both signatures (vendor and company signatures) on record. Faxes are sometimes hard to read and are easily disbuted if the text is not clear.
If it's not a legal document...who in the hell cares which way it is sent...email attachment would be best. For college work...why would you want all that paper? I hate print outs!
